Siena starters
Amanda Gatt and
Lauren Butts didn't allow a run in 14 innings Saturday, leading the Saints to a quick 3-0 and 7-0 sweep of visiting Rider. Gatt and Butts combined to allow just five hits and struck out 21 on the Saints best pitching day of the season.
Game 1 - Siena 3, Rider 0
Gatt tossed a complete game gem, allowing just two fifth inning hits in securing her fifth win of the season. She struck out a career-high 12 Broncs in her second shutout of the season (at Marist).
Siena (15-21-1, 9-5) scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning. Brooke Taylor was hit by a pitch to start the rally, and after Stephiane Viggiano worked a walk, Brooke Taylor advanced them with a perfect sacrifice.
Rider (10-30, 4-10) starter Delany DeMello then struck out Siena's top hitter Paige Lloyd, but Abby Carpenter followed with the biggest hit of the game. Carpenter looped a double to right field that scored Taylor and Viggiano, and freshman standout Paige Hess followed with a sharp single to left to plate Carpenter.
That was more than enough run support for Gatt, who retired the final eight batters she faced.
Melanie Kalesse was the only player on either team to manage a multi-hit game. The Saints didn't commit an error.
Game 2 - Siena 7, Rider 0
Lauren Butts did her best to match Gatt's performance, twirling seven brilliant innings of shutout ball while allowing just three hits and equaling a career-high with nine strikeouts.
Siena's bats exploded for 15 hits and seven runs. The Saints grabbed the lead for good with a run in the first, then scored three in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth.
The highlight of the day came in the third when Carpenter and Hess launched back-to-back home runs to left center off Rider starter Megan McDonough.
Stephanie Viggiano, Sammy Smaldone, Alyssa Lancaster, Kalesse and Lauren Milligane all joined Carpenter and Hess with two-hit games for the Saints.
Siena nearly ended the game in the fifth as Stephanie Viggiano doubled home the seventh run, but Smaldone popped up with a chance to activate the run rule.
Butts never allowed a Rider player to reach third base.
Siena will try to inch closer to claiming a coveted spot in the MAAC Championships when it hosts Monmouth on Sunday at 1 p.m.
