LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The 2014 MAAC Champions will get a chance to defend their crown. Sophomore southpaw Chris Amorosi hurled 6.1 scoreless innings as Siena Baseball locked up a MAAC Tournament berth with a 4-1 victory in the rubber game over rival Canisius on Senior Day.

Scheduled for a pushed back 4:15 p.m. first pitch following inclement weather, the teams were delayed twice more due to a pair of separate lightning delays which totaled one hour and 38 minutes. Ultimately, the game was halted due to darkness in the bottom of the eighth inning with Siena (18-25, 11-7) batting with two on and one out.

But the Saints, which had already tacked on two insurance runs in the frame with Siena Field engulfed in near total darkness, needed to score no more in securing the program's fourth MAAC Tournament appearance in the past five seasons.

Amorosi, who burst onto the scene with 4.1 scoreless innings in a win over Canisius (25-27, 13-8) in the MAAC Championship Series last year, continued his mastery of the conference's top offense. He scattered just five hits while striking out three and walking just one to secure his third victory of the spring.

Neither team scored prior to the first two delays. Siena, which had the majority of chances, ultimately stranded 13 runners before finally breaking through in the bottom of the sixth against the fourth Golden Griffins' pitcher.

Freshman Dan Lowndes got the Saints on the board first, extending his hitting streak to six games with a run scoring single to plate Dave Hoffmann. Siena tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh following an RBI single from Alex Tuccio which chased home Brian Fay.

The Golden Griffins halved the deficit in the top of the eighth on a two-out RBI double by Zack Garick. But in the bottom of the frame, the first three Saints reached including two via errors. Justin Esquerra capped the victory with a run-scoring single, with the umpires finally halting the game immediately thereafter.

Esquerra and Fay, who were two of six seniors to walk across the Times Union Center stage in the morning and receive their Siena College diplomas, finished with two hits apiece in their final Siena Field performances. Kyano Cummings came in to record the final five outs to earn his seventh save as the Saints defeated their MAAC rivals for the sixth time in eight meetings dating back to the start of last season.

The Saints conclude regular season action with a series-opening doubleheader at Fairfield beginning Thursday at noon. Although Siena has clinched one of six MAAC Tournament berths, the Saints can greatly improve their seeding with a successful outcome against the Stags. Siena enters the final weekend in fifth place in the conference standings, but is just a half game back of both Canisius and Monmouth which are tied for third and just one game back of second place Quinnipiac.
