The Siena Softball team split their doubleheader with Quinnipiac Saturday, losing 4-3 in game one before bouncing back to win 4-2 in game two. With the rest of the action around the MAAC Saturday the Saints can still finish as high as a two seed in the MAAC tournament.
Game 1 - Quinnipiac 4, Siena 3
The Saints (18-24-1,12-6) out-hit the Bobcats 9-7, but left eight runners on base in the loss. They would take the lead 2-1 in the second inning on a Lauren Milligan RBI single, and Melanie Kalesse scoring on a wild pitch.
Quinnipiac (17-32,8-11) regained the lead in the fifth, scoring three in the inning pushing their margin to two. In the top of the seventh Paige Lloyd singled home Stephanie Viggiano, but the Saints were unable to score Lloyd who had advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Amanda Gatt pitched a complete game striking out seven in the loss.
Game 2 - Siena 4, Quinnipiac 2
Siena responded early in game two scoring three runs in the first inning. A Paige Hess two-RBI single opened the scoring, and Hess would later score on an error by the Quinnipiac shortstop.
The Bobcats would score single runs in the first and fifth innings, and the Saints took a one run lead into the seventh. Viggiano gave the team the insurance they needed in the seventh, scoring on an error by the third basemen.
Lauren Butts pitched all seven, striking out 10 in the victory.
With the split the Saints move to 12-6 in conference. With Iona, Canisius and Manhattan all getting swept the Saints can still finish as high as two seed with a sweep of Iona, Caninisus being swept by Rider and a Manhattan OR Fairfield sweep of their head-to-head doubleheader. The team takes on the Gaels for a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m. with Senior Day ceremonies set to begin at 12:45.
