Siena Baseball earned its first win of 2016, posting a 5-3 victory in the second game of a series-opening doubleheader at George Mason. The Patriots captured the opener 5-2 at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
Game 1: George Mason 5, Siena 2
George Mason (3-10) scored the first five runs to take the series opener from Siena (0-11). Brady Acker went 3-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases for the Patriots and delivered the big blow with a two-run single in the fifth.
The Saints scored both of their runs and notched three of their six hits during a ninth inning rally. Pinch hitter Ryan Stefaniak drove home the first run on a groundout and Dan Lowndes delivered an RBI single in the frame. Siena ultimately brought the tying run to the plate in pinch hitter Carlos Tapia, but George Mason's Zach Mort struck him out swinging to quell the comeback.
Tyler Zombro hurled eight shutout innings, scattering three hits and struck out five to earn the win for George Mason. Freshmen Tom Miller and Tim Zehnbauer split pitching duties for the Saints, with Zehnbauer tossing 3.2 hitless innings with five strikeouts.
Game 2: Siena 5, George Mason 3
Siena (1-11) scored four times on the strength of six hits over the first two innings en route to recording its first win of the season. Jordan Bishop led the way offensively, tying a career-high with three of the Saints' season-high 13 hits.
Alex Tuccio and Brett Connors produced run-scoring hits in the first inning and Max Goione and Bishop delivered RBI's in the second inning to give Siena the early advantage.
George Mason (3-11) scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning, with a single from Tim Quinn driving in a pair of Patriots.
Siena added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI double from Joe Drpich.
Freshman Dylan D'Anna pitched the first five innings to earn his first collegiate victory for the Saints. Kyano Cummings closed things out with four shutout frames allowing just one hit while striking out five to record the save.
The teams will close out the series Sunday with first pitch of the rubber game scheduled for 1 p.m.
