March 13, 2016 Box Score
Mother Nature was the only force that could cool off Siena's red-hot bats Sunday. The Saints erupted for their most runs scored in six years as Siena Baseball routed George Mason 19-7 in a rain shortened rubber game to take the series at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
The game was finally called with two outs in the top of the eighth inning and Siena (2-11) threatening for even more with the bases loaded. Nonetheless when it was all said and done the Saints had reached base safely a whopping 35 times in posting the program's highest run total since a 21-14 seven-inning win at NYIT on Mar. 20, 2010.
The Saints pounded out a season-high 15 hits and worked an extraordinary 16 walks. Eight members of Siena's starting lineup registered hits and seven scored. Jordan Bishop and Joe Drpich each reached base six times and Matt Hamel five. Alex Tuccio recorded a team-high three hits and was one of six Saints to produce multiple RBI.
Siena struck first blood with four runs to lead off the top of the first, but George Mason (3-12) responded with two in the bottom of the frame and added three more in the second to claim an early 5-4 advantage.
But the lead would be short-lived as the Saints responded with four more runs in the fourth highlighted by a three-run homerun from Drpich to go back in front for good. Drpich led the Saints with five RBI.
George Mason rallied to within 8-7 in the bottom of the inning, but the Saints got a run back in the fifth and exploded for a seven-run sixth en route to scoring 11 unanswered runs to end the game.
In what was an evenly matched barnburner early, Chris Amorosi settled down the Siena bullpen late. He closed things out with 3.2 scoreless innings in being awarded the victory.
Fresh off their first two victories of 2016 over the weekend, Siena concludes its season opening 16-game road trip beginning next Saturday with the start of a three-game series at Indiana State.
