The Siena softball team returned to the diamond Friday after a 12 day break and earned a split in their first two games at the UMBC Spring Classice. The Saints were able to defeat Sacred Heart 7-2 but fell to host UMBC by a final of 6-1.
In the Sacred Heart contest, Siena doubled up the Pioneers in the hit category by a total of 10-5. Lauren Butts recorded her fifth win of the season after she tossed another complete game in the circle, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out and walking six.
The Saints started the first inning in style highlighted by a lead off home run by Sammy Smaldone. Alyssa Lancaster drove in the second run of the inning when the junior produced a sacrifice fly to left, which was deep enough to drive in Melanie Kalesse. They added their third tally of the frame when Paige Hess crossed home on an error by Sacred Heart second baseman Nicole Deissler.
The Pioneers would produce both of their two runs in the contest during the third inning on Victoria D'Addario base knock to center field.
Siena would add three runs in the fourth and then tallied one more for insurance in the seventh. The Saints held the Sacred Heart off the scoreboard in the final four innings.
In the loss to UMBC, the Siena was limited to one run on Jessika Jaime's second inning RBI single to left. The base hit brought in Chelsey Drew. Jaime led the Saints offense in the game with two hits and one RBI.
The Retrievers scored three runs in the first, two in the third and one in the fifth, tallying six runs for UMBC.
Danielle Cacciola was credited with the loss after allowing five runs on five hits. The junior walked four and struck out three in her eighth appearance of the season.
Siena will seek to defeat the Retrievers Saturday when they UMBC again Saturday at 12:45 p.m.
