Seventh Inning Rally Sends Saints Past Sycamores

March 20, 2016

Box Score

Freshman shortstop and No. 9 hitter Max Goione delivered the go-ahead RBI single to cap a three-run seventh inning rally as Siena Baseball took the series finale from Midwest power Indiana State 3-2 at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute, Ind. Veteran southpaws Chris Amorosi and Kyano Cummings combined for the pitching staff's most impressive performance to date on the young season for Siena, which concluded its season opening 16-game road trip on a high note.

Indiana State (13-7) struck first blood in a pitcher's duel, with the game's first two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Andy Young opened the scoring with a run-scoring single and Kaden Moore followed with an RBI double later in the frame to stake the Sycamores to a 2-0 advantage.

Meanwhile, Indiana State starter Ryan Keaffaber limited Siena (3-13) to just two hits over the first six innings and retired 12 in a row heading into the seventh. But the Saints' bats finally came to life as Joe Drpich opened the frame with a double and Fred Smart followed with a single to chase Keaffaber.

Freshman DH Brian Kelly promptly greeted Sycamore reliever Tyler Ward with an RBI double and catcher Phil Madonna later drew a bases loaded walk to force home the tying run. Goione then delivered the decisive blow in a seventh inning in which the Saints set nine men to the plate and recorded four hits.

Cummings did the rest out of the Siena bullpen, snuffing out several Indiana State rally bids as the Sycamores left 12 runners on base. Cummings spun the final 4.1 innings, scattering three hits and struck out three to earn his first win of the season.

Amorosi went the first 4.2 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out four in a solid outing for a Siena pitching staff which bequeathed a season-low two runs. The Saints had entered play allowing 9.9 runs per game over their first 15 contests, and Indiana State had combined for 22 runs on 28 hits over the first two games of the series.

Keaffaber allowed four hits and two runs over six-plus innings for Indiana State as the Saints cut down a strong Sycamores squad which earlier in the week had defeated 13th ranked NC State in Raleigh and also boasts wins over No. 25 Oklahoma State and Big Ten foe Iowa this season.

Siena finally returns to the Capital Region for the first time in 2016 when the Saints open conference play and christen new-look Siena Field for the start of a three-game series with a Good Friday doubleheader against Niagara beginning at noon.
