Late Inning Rallies Help Siena Take Down Holy Cross

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y- Siena softball opened their 2016 home campaign Thursday on the right foot when the Saints took two from Holy Cross. The Saints took the first game by a final of 8-5 and found themselves on the top again winning the second game of the doubleheader 5-2.

Madysen Cossack led Siena's offensive output in the first game as the freshman finished with three hits, an RBI and a run scored. In game one, the Crusaders jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the first five innings, but the Saints erupted for six runs in their half of the fifth to take the lead 6-5. The first run came after Jess Vollmer reached on a fielder's choice. This ignited an inning in which Saints compiled six hits led by Allyssa Lancaster's two RBI double to left. The final tally of the frame came from the bat of Melanie Kalesse's on her RBI groundout to second to drive in Madysen Cossack.

Siena's pitching staff limited the Holy Cross offense to two hits in the final two innings. Antonia Edwards registered the win after the senior entered the game in relief and pitched the final three innings. She allowed just one run on four hits while walking one and striking out three.

The Saints had to hit the comeback trail once again in game two. After the Crusaders took a 2-0 lead over the first two innings. The Siena half of the fourth inning saw all five of their runs in the game score. Lancaster led the comeback with RBI double to center. Sammy Smaldone got in the action with a two RBI double of her own to extend the lead and Paige Hess' two RBI single to left capped the scoring in the inning.

Melanie Kalesse led the Saints in game two with two hits and a run scored. Danielle Cacciola got the win for Siena after the junior entered the game in relief and threw four frames of shutout ball while only allowing one hit.

The Saints (9-8) will next play Tuesday when they travel to West Point to face Army at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.
