In a season full of firsts for Siena's running program, the Saints hit the ground running in their inaugural Division I Outdoor Track meet Saturday. Junior Paolo Fiore and senior Christie MacFarlane each won races for the Saints which finished sixth out nine teams on the men's side and fourth of eight amongst the women's competitors at the Monmouth Invitational in West Long Branch, N.J.
"I was really pleased with the results of today's meet," said head coach John Kenworthy. "We came in expecting to shake the rust off after over a month away from racing, and many athletes set season and personal bests. That's a good sign we are ready to make big strides forward this outdoor season. The racing and training through the winter has paid off, and over the next six weeks we will be looking to capitalize on those investments."
The host Hawks -- who are the defending MAAC Champions and preseason favorites -- won both the men's and women's events handily. Siena finished ahead of MAAC foe Marist in both the men's and women's competitions.
Fiore captured the 3000-meter run in a time of 8:43.97, while junior Nick Cornine (10,000-meter) and freshman William Randall (3000-meter steeplechase) each recorded strong third place finishes.
MacFarlane won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:27.30. Freshman Sarah Forman finished second of 59 runners in the 1500-meter and sophomore Dominica Bleichert also placed second in the 10,000-meter. Junior Shannon Bauer added a third place finish in the 3000-meter.
The Saints return to action Saturday when they square off with host Bryant along with Colgate, Rhode Island and Vermont in Smithfield, R.I.
