March 29, 2016 Box Score
Siena Baseball exploded for eight runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat Army 13-6 in West Point. Pinch hitter Dan Lowndes rallied the Saints with a two-out RBI double in the top of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.
Joe Drpich finished a homerun shy of a cycle for Siena (5-15), going 5-6 at the plate with four RBI and a pair of runs scored. Matt Hamel added three of the Saints' season-high 17 hits.
Army West Point (9-14) scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to reclaim a 5-4 lead in a seesaw affair. That would remain the score until there were two outs in the ninth, when Siena rallied to draw even.
With the Saints down to their final out Brett Connors, who had singled earlier in the inning, advanced into scoring position on a failed pickoff attempt. Lowndes then drove him home with a double to center to knot the score. Siena would ultimately load the bases and threaten to take the lead, but couldn't pull in front. The Saints stranded 17 men on base in the game.
But in the 10th inning, Siena would break through in a big way. The Saints sent 12 men to the plate and erupted for their eight runs despite managing just two hits. Siena worked three walks in the inning, and three more batters reached base after being hit by pitches. A total of five Saints reached base via hit batsmen in the contest.
With the bases loaded, both Phil Madonna and then Ian Dillard were drilled to force in the go-ahead runs. Drpich then delivered the knockout blow with a two-run double to center to break the game open.
Senior captain Bryan Goossens shut the door in the bottom of the frame, and hurled the final 2.2 innings registering four strikeouts to earn the win in relief.
The Saints continue their busy week which features six games when they return to the Capital Region Wednesday. Siena hosts Brown in non-conference doubleheader action beginning at 2 p.m.
