The Siena softball team powered its way to two victories in non-conference action Thursday taking down Fairleigh Dickinson by a final of 13-3 in five innings in game one and then topped the Knights 7-2 in the nightcap. Sammy Smaldone went a perfect 4-4 with a three run home run to give Siena a sizable advantage in game one. Jess Vollmer had two hits in the second game to lead the Saints in the category.
Game One-Siena 13, FDU 3 (5)
Siena pushed 11 runs across in the second and third innings combined to build a seven run lead over FDU. Smaldone got the scoring started with her three run blast and later in the inning Paige Hess hit the second round tripper for the home team. The Saints compiled six runs on six hits in their half of the third inning.
Lauren Butts tossed five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out one and walking two. The sophomore recorded her team-leading sixth win on the season.
The Saints tallied two more runs in the fourth on an RBI single from Alyssa Lancaster while later in the inning Hess drove in the final run of the day on a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Brooke Taylor.
With the mercy rule in effect, the game was called after five innings.
Game Two-Siena 7, FDU 2
The Saints left off right where they ended game one by manufacturing runs in all but one inning. Madysen Cossack drove the ball to center to drive in Chelsey Drew and Jess Vollmer to give Siena the early 2-0 advantage. They would then go on to tack on single tallies in the next three innings to build the lead to five.
Siena added two runs in the fifth after Jazmin Ortiz singled to second base to score Melanie Kalesse and would score one more time on a pinch hit single to left to increase the margin to five.
Antonia Edwards picked up the win in the circle after the senior threw five innings while shutting out the Knights on the scoreboard.
The Saints continue their season-long eight game homestand Saturday when they open MAAC play against Manhattan at noon and 2 p.m.
