Game Two Box Score
Fred Smart smacked two home runs to rally Siena Baseball in the opener and Bryan Goossens tossed five effective innings in the nightcap as the Saints swept the series-opening doubleheader from defending MAAC Champion Canisius in Buffalo. Siena captured the first game 6-4 and clinched the series victory with a 3-1 triumph in Game Two in a heavyweight battle between the two programs that have squared off in the past three MAAC Championship Series.
With his 831st career victory in the second game, Siena Head Coach Tony Rossi tied former longtime Canisius softball coach Mike Rappl for the most wins by any coach in any sport in MAAC history.
Game One: Siena 6, Canisius 4
Smart's second home run of the game -- a go-ahead two-run shot -- sparked a four-run eighth inning to rally Siena (7-17, 3-2) past Canisius (11-15, 2-3) in the series lid lifter to snap the defending MAAC Champions' eight-game winning streak. Jordan Bishop and Phil Madonna paced five Saints with multiple hits, contributing three apiece to the Siena's 14-hit barrage.
The Golden Griffins harbored a slim 3-2 lead heading into the eighth inning before the Saints' bats came to life. Siena sent eight men to the plate in the frame, stringing together five hits. After Joe Drpich singled to lead off the inning, Smart deposited his second big fly of the game over the wall in right center field to put the Saints back in front for good. Madonna and Tyler Martis followed with RBI doubles later in the frame to produce two additional insurance runs.
Freshman southpaw Tom Miller hurled seven strong innings, allowing eight hits and three runs while walking two and striking out six to earn his first win in a Siena uniform.
Game Two: Siena 3, Canisius 1 (7)
Bishop and Martis delivered run-scoring hits and Goossens silenced the potent Canisius bats as the Saints captured their fourth win in a row in Buffalo over the perennial MAAC contenders.
Trailing 1-0 early, the Saints responded in the top of the second inning. Martis drove home the first run and Bishop followed with an RBI single of his own to give Siena the lead. Bishop was the only player to record multiple hits for either team in the nightcap, and finished with five hits in the doubleheader to raise his quickly climbing average to a robust .345.
Meanwhile Goossens quickly settled down after a slow start on the mound, retiring 11 of the final 12 batters he faced to secure his second win of the week. Kyano Cummings, who tossed two innings to pick up the save in game one, threw two more shutout frames to close out the contest with his second save of the day.
The teams are scheduled to complete the three-game series Saturday, with a hopeful first pitch planned for 2 p.m.
