Swain, Saints Walk Off With Thrilling Series Win Over Bobcats

April 10, 2016

Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Dan Swain scampered home with the winning run as a walk-off wild pitch propelled Siena Baseball to an 8-7 triumph in 12 innings to take both the rubber game and series from Quinnipiac at Siena Field. The decisive play capped a clutch performance by the junior centerfielder who had previously delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning and the game-tying run scoring double in the 10th.

Aside from the chilly sub-40 degree temperatures, the game felt a lot like a potential Memorial Day Weekend MAAC Tournament clash between a pair of teams predicted to be conference frontrunners.

Each side traded jabs throughout, with Quinnipiac (9-19, 1-5) reclaiming a 5-4 lead after Ben Gibson homered on the first pitch of the eighth inning. Siena (9-20, 5-4) responded in the home half of the inning with Dan Lowndes producing the game-tying single, and Swain plated him with the go-ahead run to put the Saints back in front.

Siena had a chance to close things out in the ninth with the Bobcats down to their final out, but couldn't seal the deal. Quinnipiac's Matthew Oestreicher dunked in the game-tying single just out of the reach of a diving Swain which would ultimately send the game to extra innings.

The Bobcats struck first blood in 10th inning on Julius Saporito's RBI single. However in the home half of the inning Swain came through in the clutch again, doubling to left to bring home Lowndes with the tying score.

Swain then nearly ending things in the 12th, but just missed a walk-off home run instead settling for a double off the base of the left centerfield wall. He advanced to third with one out in the inning and with Joe Drpich at the plate, Quinnipiac reliever Gregory Egan bounced a pitch in the dirt that got away from catcher Lou Iannotti as Swain raced across home plate and directly into a celebratory Gatorade bath.

Swain reached base five times in the game which included three hits and he added a pair of RBI and runs scored. Lowndes also contributed a pair of clutch hits and RBI while scoring three times.

Equally as impressive as Swain's performance at the plate was senior southpaw Kyano Cummings' yeoman like effort on the mound. Just 24 hours after securing the final four outs to a record a high pressure save in Game One of the series, Cummings hurled a whopping 145 pitches and struck out nine batters in pitching the final eight innings of remarkable relief.

Iannotti led Quinnipiac's 15-hit attack with three hits and three RBI, while Rob Pescitelli reached base safely in all six of his plate appearances and scored three runs.

The Saints open a five-game road trip Wednesday in the Bronx with a 6 p.m. matchup at Fordham.
