LOUDONVILLE, N.Y.-Siena Softball hit a total of seven home runs in two games as the Saints salvaged a split with crosstown rival UAlbany. Siena took game one by a final of 10-0 in five innings while the Great Danes came out on top in the nightcap, 13-8. Sammy Smaldone and Chelsey Drew each hit two round-trippers on the day while Paige Hess blasted her fourth of the season. Madysen Cossack tallied her second career home run while Loryn DeFalco the first of her collegiate career.
Game One-Siena 10, UAlbany 0 (5)
Smaldone led off the home half of the first inning with her first homer of the day as the senior sparked a six run opening frame for the Saints. After Jess Vollmer got on courtesy of a walk, Drew hit a two run blast to keep the strong inning going. Siena was not done as the home team would add three more runs to their lead on a 2 RBI single to center by Brooke Taylor and then close out the scoring in the inning when Smaldone batted for the second time and contributed an RBI base knock to right center.
The Siena pitching staff limited the Great Danes to just five hits. Lauren Butts tossed the first four innings. The sophomore allowed just four hits while striking out five and walking three. Danielle Cacciola pitched the final inning of the game as the mercy rule was put into effect after five innings.
The Saints added two runs to their lead when in the second DeFalco got ahold a pitch and deposited the ball over the left field fence. Siena closed out their scoring in the fourth when Jessika Jaime recorded a 2 RBI single to drive in the rest of the Saints' runs.
Game Two-UAlbany 13, Siena 8
Siena jumped out to a four run lead over the first three innings of action, all behind homers from Drew, Hess and Smaldone but UAlbany ignited for nine runs in the fourth.
Following the big frame by the Great Danes, the Saints cut into the lead when they plated two runs in their half of the fifth. Drew reached on a fielders' choice and with the ball in play, Smaldone was able to score.
Antonia Edwards got the start in the circle as the senior went five while striking out four and walking two. Siena was able to add two more tallies to the scoreboard after Cossack went deep and gone to right center.
The Saints will next play Saturday when they host Quinnipiac at noon and 2 p.m.
