Upstate Classic Results
Siena Outdoor Track wrapped up a busy weekend Sunday, with the second day of competition at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic. The Saints opened competition Saturday, while also competing at the Upstate Classic at nearby RPI in split squad action.
"I was really pleased with our results at Bucknell this weekend," said head coach John Kenworthy. "We came out here to find extremely deep and competitive fields to chase some fast times and begin to sharpen our racing skills against some of the best competition we can find. Seeing big personal bests from many of our athletes in these races is a good sign that we are taking the right steps forward as we prepare for championships."
On the men's side at Bucknell, Paolo Fiore and Travis Fairlee each recorded sub 4-minute performances in the 1500-meter, while Fairlee and Taylor Davis each broke the 2-minute barrier in the 800-meter. Fiore raced to a time of 3:57.07 in the 1500-meter and set a new school record with a time of 1:56 in the 800-meter. Meanwhile, Fairlee recorded times of 3:57.55 and 1:56.10 respectively.
"Time barriers are a big deal in our sport, so to see Fiore and Fairlee go under 4:00 for the 1500-meter and Davis and Fairlee breaking 2:00 for the 800-meter for the first time is a great sign," noted Kenworthy. "Those performances give confidence and elevate the entire program."
William Randall won his section of the 5K for the Saints with a time of 15:13.48 to exceed his previous personal best by 24 seconds. Nick Cornine recorded a third place finish in the 10000-meter, clocking in a time of 32:17.48.
On the women's side, Serena Rizzo ran a new school record time of 2:24.27 in the 800-meter and added a solid time of 4:48.52 in the 1500-meter. Dominica Bleichert clocked in a personal record time of 39:34.63 in the 10000-meter and Christie MacFarlane finished fifth in the 3000-meter with a time of 10:31.31.
At RPI Saturday, Daniel Medici was the top Siena finisher in both races, recording a time of 4:20.13 in the 1500-meter and 2:07.18 in the 800-meter. Erin Morrell recorded her first sub-20 time on the track, finishing sixth in the 5K with a time of 19:41.91.
"The goal with splitting the squad was to find great races for our entire group," added Kenworthy." And in that regard, the weekend couldn't have gone any better. Everyone had the chance to step up and execute the races we are looking for as championship season nears. It's about stringing the right efforts together week after week, and both at Bucknell and RPI we saw the team doing exactly that."
The Saints return to action for the Upstate Challenge at Cornell Saturday.
