The Manhattan College softball team swept Siena in the conference opener for both sides. Sammy Smaldone, Paige Hess and Alyssa Lancaster tallied two hits apiece to lead the Saints in the first game of the doubleheader. Smaldone then added two hits in the nightcap to record four total hits.
Game One-Manhattan 6, Siena 3
The Saints struck first in the bottom of the first with two runs. Hess doubled down the right field line to score Smaldone while later in the frame Alyssa Lancaster recorded a single to center to bring home Chelsey Drew.
The Jaspers responded in their next three offensive half innings, scoring all six of their runs during that span. Their largest offensive output came in the fourth inning as the visiting team plated three runs all on RBI singles.
The Saints would plate one more run in the contest on a sacrifice fly to center from Brooke Taylor to score Lancaster.
Kelsey Brennan was awarded the win for the Jaspers while the loss went to Siena's Lauren Butts. The sophomore went three and two thirds innings, allowing six runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out four.
Game Two-Manhattan 5, Siena 3
Siena and Manhattan traded three runs apiece in the second inning. Two runs came from the bat of Lancaster on her RBI double to left.
The contest remained knotted for the next two innings and the Jaspers pulled ahead with single tallies in the final two frames to top the Saints 5-3 in the nightcap.
Erin Hamm recorded the win in the circle for Manhattan while the loss was credited to Butts.
The Saints return to the softball diamond Tuesday for a doubleheader when they host Cornell at 3 and 5 p.m.
