The Siena Softball team secured their sixth straight 20 win season with a doubleheader sweep of Rider on Saturday afternoon. The Saints reach the 20 win plateau for the sixth straight year after only reaching the 20 win mark just once in the first 35 years of program history. Siena took game one against the Broncs 7-5 and then won the nightcap 3-1.
Game One- Siena 7, Rider 5
Siena jumped on the scoreboard early with three runs over the first two frames. After Paige Hess reached base on a fielder's choice, Chelsey Drew continued her hot streak of late with a two run home run to right center.
The third run of the early going came from an RBI single to right center by Jessika Jaime. The base knock scored Brooke Taylor.
Rider trimmed the Saints' lead to just one after a two run third inning. Toni Nino delivered an RBI base hit single to center to get the Broncs on the board. Josettee Spencer continued the inning with a single to left center to make the score 3-2.
However, Siena would respond in their next half inning. The Saints plated two more runs, one off the bat of Loryn DeFalco and the other Sammy Smaldone. DeFalco singled to right center to score Taylor while Sammy Smaldone hit a sacrifice fly to right, which was deep enough to score Melanie Kalesse.
The Broncs would continue to try and get back in the game as they would score three times in the bottom of the fifth. But with ever Rider rally, the Saints had the answer. Siena would later score two runs in the top of the seventh to close the game out.
Danielle Cacciola recorded the win in the circle for the Saints after the junior came into the game in relief and tossed the final three innings of action. She allowed three hits while walking two and striking out one to earn her sixth win of the year.
Game Two- Siena 3, Rider 1
Siena's three runs came over the first two innings of action. Drew got things started for the Saints after the junior singled to right center. The base knock scored Hess.
In the third frame, Sammy Smaldone chipped in with a two RBI double to left center to extend the Siena lead to three.
Rider would only get one run across as they were able to get one back in the fourth inning on an error.
Antonia Edwards got the call in the circle for the Saints as the senior went the distance, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five and walking one.
Siena returns to the field Sunday when they take on Monmouth in West Long Branch at 1 and 3 p.m., games in which will be available on ESPN3.com.
