The Syracuse softball team took two games from Siena on Thursday afternoon. The Orange took game one by a final of 9-1 and then the home team took the nightcap 8-6. Madysen Cossack recorded two hits and one RBI in the first game while Sammy Smaldone registered a perfect 3-3 game at the plate with three runs scored in game two.
Game One-Syracuse 9, Siena 1
Syracuse scored the first run of the contest in the second inning on a home run to center field by Andrea Bombace. In the next frame Siena would answer on an RBI double to left center by Madysen Cossack.
The Orange broke the tie after the game was deadlocked for an inning. Syracuse tallied two runs in the fourth and then got six across in the fifth to make the margin eight and end the game in a mercy rule situation.
Antonia Edwards tossed four and two third innings in the circle for the Saints. The senior allowed nine runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out three.
Game Two-Syracuse 8, Siena 6
The Saints got the scoring started in game two. Smaldone got things started in game two with a leadoff homerun to left center. The Orange would then answer the call with a run of their own in their half of the first frame.
Siena broke the 1-1 draw in the second inning with a Loryn DeFalco single to right field. The base knock was deep enough to score Melanie Kalesse.
The visiting team then added to their lead with a third inning two-run home run to right center by Paige Hess. The home run made the lead 4-1.
Syracuse would later tie the contest as they scored three times in the third frame. The Orange recorded three runs on five hits to knot the game at four. In the next offensive inning, Syracuse saw three runs cross home plate to expand their lead to three (7-4).
The Saints cut into the lead with a two run fifth. Alyssa Lancaster launched a two-run round tripper to right to make the lead 7-6.
The Orange added an insurance tally in the sixth to extend their lead to two.
Danielle Cacciola recorded six innings of action in the circle for Siena. The junior allowed eight runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out two.
The Saints open a four-game MAAC road trip Saturday with a doubleheader at Fairfield. The games are slated at noon and 2 p.m.
