Brooke Taylor had a career day at the plate in the nightcap as the sophomore went 3-4 with six RBI and two runs scored to help the Saints secure a split with Fairfield on Saturday. The Stags shut out Siena 8-0 in six innings in game one, while the Saints were able to take game two by a final of 9-8. Paige Hess also paced the offense in game two with a four for five day at the dish.
Game One-Fairfield 8, Siena 0 (6)
Fairfield got things started in the first when they plate one run in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout to first by Courtney Hankins. The Stags then went on to tally five runs in the bottom of the second to the tune of four hits.
The Siena offense was limited to five hits. Paige Hess led the way with two hits while Alyssa Lancaster, Taylor and Melanie Kalesse each registered one.
Lauren Butts got the call in the circle. The sophomore tossed two innings and allowed six runs on five hits while striking out one and walking three. Danielle Cacciola entered the game in relief and pitched the final three and two-thirds innings. The junior allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five and walking just one.
Fairfield would add two runs late to end the game in six innings by a final of 8-0.
Game Two-Siena 9, Fairfield 8
The Saints jumped on the scoreboard early in game two to gain the early advantage. Siena plated five runs in the top of the first. Madysen Cossack got the scoring started with an RBI single to right center to drive in Lancaster. Taylor then started her career game with a two RBI shot to right field. Later in the frame, Loryn DeFalco got in the action with a single to right to score Taylor and then Sammy Smaldone closed out the big inning as she drove in the fifth run for Siena.
Taylor then found herself back in the action in the second when she reached on a fielder's choice. That hit was enough to score another tally for the Saints. The road team would put up one more run to make the margin seven before the Stags made their push.
Fairfield tallied seven runs on seven hits over the next two innings to tie the game going into the late stages.
Going into the sixth with the score deadlocked, Taylor completed her career day when she launched a two run home run to make the margin two. The Stags were able to plate one in the sixth but were unable to get that elusive tying run across as Siena took game two by a final of 9-8.
Antonia Edwards recorded the win for the Saints. The senior pitched four and two-thirds allowing seven runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking just one. Cacciola came in and preserved the win, going the final two and a third.
Siena (22-19, 7-7) will return to action Tuesday when they travel to New Rochelle to take on Iona at times to be determined.
