LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Siena Baseball Head Coach Tony Rossi has achieved numerous milestones during his 47 years guiding the program, and reached another major landmark Saturday. With the Saints' 3-2 win over Quinnipiac in the series-opening doubleheader at Siena Field, Rossi recorded his 832nd career victory to become the all-time winningest coach in any sport in MAAC history.
Rossi passes former longtime Canisius Softball coach Mike Rappl who retired following the 2014 season with 831 wins in 35 seasons leading the Golden Griffins.
Quinnipiac earned a split of the doubleheader with a 7-0 shutout in the nightcap to set up a pivotal rubber game Sunday at 2 p.m.
Game One: Siena 3, Quinnipiac 2
Freshman southpaw Tommy Miller hurled his second straight conference gem and classmate Jordan Folgers drove home the decisive run to lead the Saints (8-20, 4-4) to the series-opening victory.
Miller, who twirled seven strong innings allowing just three runs to earn the win at defending MAAC Champion Canisius last weekend, silenced the Quinnipiac (9-18, 1-4) bats for 7.2 innings. He scattered just four hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out six to record his second straight victory.
Senior rightfielder Fred Smart staked Miller to an early 2-0 lead with his conference-leading sixth home run of the season in the opening inning. But the Bobcats responded with a pair of runs in their half of third to knot the score.
In the home half of the sixth, Folgers delivered an RBI groundout off Quinnipiac ace Thomas Jankins to chase home Jordan Bishop with what turned out to be the decisive run. Senior southpaw Kyano Cummings recorded the final four outs on the mound for the Saints to record his fourth save.
Game Two: Quinnipiac 7, Siena 0 (7)
Quinnipiac scored five unearned runs off a pair of Siena errors to capture the nightcap. Sophomore righthander Taylor Luciani went the distance for the Bobcats, tossing seven shutout innings while allowing six hits and striking out seven.
The Bobcats jumped in front with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on a two-out, two-run single by Matthew Oestreicher. Quinnipiac added a pair of unearned runs in the third and three more unearned insurance tallies in the seventh to pull away.
Senior captain Bryan Goossens went the distance in being saddled with the loss for the Saints. He allowed 10 hits and two earned runs and struck out two batters without issuing a walk. Goossens threw 63 of his 88 pitches for strikes.
