The Iona softball took a pair of games form Siena on Tuesday in New Rochelle. The Gaels took game one 8-3 and then the home team took the nightcap by a final of 5-3. Loryn DeFalco led the Saints in game two as the freshman had a 3 for 3 day at the plate.
Game One- Iona 8, Siena 3
The Gaels scored the first five runs of the contest as Iona tallied two runs in the first and three in the second.
Siena and the Gaels traded runs in the third after the Saints was able to get on the board in the third when Sammy Smaldone grounded out the shortstop and the hit was deep enough to manufacture a run and score DeFalco. Iona scored its run on an RBI single to third base from Ashlyn Morris.
The Gaels would add a single tally in the fourth on an RBI double to left by Tori Danner to extend their lead to six.
The teams would later trade in the sixth. Melanie Kalesse doubled to right center to drive in Megan McNamara. Siena would add one more run in the top of the seventh on a homer by DeFalco.
Antonia Edwards got the start in the circle. The senior tossed two innings of action while allowing five runs on five hits. She also recorded three walks while striking out two.
Game Two-Iona 5, Siena 3
The first runs of the game came in the fourth. Iona struck first with two in the fourth. Paige Hess led Siena with two hits in the nightcap.
The teams would trade runs in the in the sixth. The Saints added their run after the Gaels walked in Smaldone.
Lauren Butts was credited with the loss after the sophomore allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking three.
The Saints will close out the 2015-16 regular season with a four game homestand this weekend. Siena will host Niagara on Saturday at noon and 2 p.m. and then play Marist at noon and 2 p.m. on Sunday at Siena Field.
