LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -The Siena softball team took two from Niagara on Saturday in MAAC Softball action. The Saints won game one by a final of 5-3 and then captured the nightcap, 9-5. Chelsey Drew and Allyssa Lancaster led the Siena in game one with two hits apiece while Paige Hess and Lancaster tallied two hits apiece in the second game of the day.
Game One- Siena 5, Niagara 3
The first two innings saw no runs come across the plate. The Purple Eagles opened the scoring in the third on an RBI double to left by Sarah March to give Niagara the early 1-0 advantage.
Siena would get the tying run and the go-ahead run in the third which was fueled by back-to-back triples by Lancaster. Drew got in the action as the junior reached on an error and would later score to help the Saints gain the lead.
The game was evened up at two in the fourth after Victoria Bretz singled to center to drive in Jennifer Szilagyi.
The Saints broke the game in the fifth when the team tallied three runs on three hits. RBI hits by Madysen Cossack, Brooke Taylor and Melanie Kalesse.
The Purple Eagles got one run back in the top of the seventh to make the final score, 5-3.
Danielle Cacciola was credited with the win in the circle. The junior entered the game in relief and tossed the final three and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out three and walking none.
Game Two- Siena 9, Niagara 5
After the first three innings in which the game saw the leader change two times, Siena erupted for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the game open. The Saints tallied their six runs on seven hits. The first five innings saw only five hits.
Lauren Butts earned the win in the circle as the sophomore came into the game in relief and threw three and one-third innings while allowing just one hit, walking one and striking out two.
Siena closes out the 2015-16 regular season with a doubleheader at home against Marist at noon and 2 p.m. Prior to the games, the Saints will honor its four seniors: Sammy Smaldone, Kalesse, Lancaster and Antonia Edwards in a special senior day ceremony.
