Siena Outdoor Track wrapped up a solid inaugural showing at the program's first-ever MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. The Saints scored 11 points collectively on the second and final day of completion, as the men finished eighth while the women ran ninth.
"I was really happy with how Day Two went," said head coach John Kenworthy. "We walked away with athletes competing in the front group in all of the events that we entered. I felt like with it being our first MAAC Championships as a program that we were ready to compete right away and were able to leave our mark."
The Saints registered seven points on the final day on the men's side, with three of those coming in the 4x800 medley relay. The tandem of Travis Fairlee, Austin Bitzas, Taylor Davis and Mike Mahoney finished sixth with a season-best time of 8:03.23. Fairlee added a point for the Saints by clocking in eighth with a time of 4:01.36 in the 1500-meter. The men also picked up two points in the 4x400 medley relay and added a point in the 4x100.
Sarah Forman was responsible for three of the women's four points thanks to a personal best time in the 1500-meter. She clocked in with a time of 4:38.8 to check in sixth overall. Siena added a point in the 4x800 medley relay as the team of Serena Rizzo, Forman, Kristen Lancto and Charlotte Brunjes ran their fastest time of the year in 10:01.92.
Following the conclusion of the championships, a total of 17 Saints were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team during the conference's awards show. To be eligible to be named to the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student athlete must have reached sophomore standing academically and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Men's honorees were senior Davis, juniors Bitzas, Eric Brower, Paolo Fiore and Shane Fiust-Klink, and sophomores Chad Dashnaw and Fairlee. Women's selections included seniors Brunjes, Lancto and Christie MacFarlane, juniors Shannon Bauer, Kelly Pasko, Annica Penn, Kelly Russo and Sydney Sericolo and sophomores Erin Morrell and Nicole Romanzo.
While the Saints' team season is complete, Fiore will represent Siena at the IC4A Championships next weekend. Fiore's time of 3:54.57 in Saturday's 1500-meter preliminary qualified him into the trials next Saturday at Princeton.
"It's exciting to wrap up a historical year for this program in which we competed in Siena's first three full seasons with the additions of both indoor and outdoor track," said Kenworthy. "I think that our student athletes handled the new elements of competition for the first time extremely well. We performed at a MAAC Championships level right off the bat, and showed that we belonged in our first year as a program. Now, with the expectation of knowing what the championships bring, we will be able to move forward and prepare throughout the summer as we head into the fall with a lot more lofty goals and expectations in mind."
