Aug. 30, 2016 TopDrawerSoccer Top-25 Poll
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Following their impressive season-opening 4-1 triumph over defending Northeast Conference Champion and preseason favorite LIU Brooklyn Friday, Siena Soccer has earned national recognition. The Saints have been ranked 21st nationally in the first TopDrawerSoccer Top-25 Poll of the regular season.
North Carolina heads TopDrawerSoccer's first regular season Top-25 Poll, followed by Maryland, Akron, Syracuse and Indiana to round out the top-five. The Saints checked in just behind 20th ranked Hofstra, and ahead of Dartmouth, Wake Forest, California and Ohio State which rounded out the Top-25.
The Saints kicked off the program's 43rd season in remarkable fashion last week with a dominant effort as they ended the nation's second longest active unbeaten streak at 13, handing LIU Brooklyn its first defeat since last Sept. 20. The Blackbirds had entered the matchup amongst teams receiving votes in the College Soccer News Preseason Top-25 Poll.
Junior striker Alexander Tejera scored twice including the game-winning tally in the victory. For his efforts, he was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, and was amongst others considered for TopDrawerSoccer's National Team of the Week.
This marks the first time that Siena has earned consideration for any major national poll since receiving votes for two consecutive weeks in the NSCAA Top-25 Coaches' Poll in mid-September of 2014. The Saints were amongst teams also receiving votes in that preeminent national poll, with a peak of 24 votes on Sept. 16 which marked the 32nd highest total in the nation. Siena has never been nationally ranked in the official NCAA Men's Soccer Top-25 Poll, administered by the NSCAA.
The Saints will look to build upon their early momentum when they return to action tonight for a 7 p.m. kickoff at New Hampshire.
