Softball Drops First Two Games of 2017

Siena Softball started its 2017 campaign on Friday, playing two games in Madeira Beach, FL. The Saints fell 8-5 to UMass in eight innings in game one before falling to Robert Morris 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap.

Game One: UMass 8, Siena 5 (8) Chelsey Drew started her 2017 season with a bang on Friday, hitting two home runs, with three RBI. Jazmin Ortiz added a solo blast of her own in the sixth inning. Starting pitcher Lauren Butts struck out four and gave up just two earned runs in five innings of work.

UMass (2-0) struck first in the top of the second on an RBI double by Nicole Imhof. Siena (0-2) took the lead in the bottom half of the frame when Chelsey Drew hit her first homerun of the game, and 12th of her career, scoring Loryn DeFalco.

The score remained 2-1 until the top of the fifth when the Minutewomen notched three runs on three hits and two Siena errors to take a 4-2 lead. Drew answered for the Saints with her second home run of the game, cutting the lead to one. Ortiz brought Siena even in the next frame with her first career home run.

Both teams were kept off the board in the next two innings, sending the game into extra innings. UMass erupted for four runs on three hits in the top of the eighth to take an 8-4 advantage. Siena added a run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Paige Hess, but the Minutewomen took the victory 8-5.

Game Two: Robert Morris 8, Siena 0 (5) Freshman Maddie McMahon made her collegiate debut against Robert Morris, getting the start on the mound for the Saints. McMahon gave up three earned runs in two innings pitched. Brooke Taylor, Patricia Kalesse, and Madysen Cossack each had singles in the game for the Saints.

The Colonials (1-5) scored their first run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Jordan Gurganus and added four more runs in the fourth, taking a 5-0 lead over Siena. The Saints scattered three hits in the second, third, and fifth innings, but were unable to plate any runs.

Freshman pitcher Madison Riggle pitched five shutout innings for Robert Morris, picking up the win. McMahon was the losing pitcher for the Saints.

Siena will be back on the field Saturday for day two of the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational. The Saints will take on Eastern Michigan at 9 a.m. and UAB at 11:30 a.m.
