Siena Softball opened its six-game California trip Tuesday at San Diego State. The Aztecs won the contest, 10-4. Loryn DeFalco hit a home run for the Saints, while Chelsey Drew was 3-3 at the plate.
The Aztecs (4-4) jumped out to an early lead in the game, scoring five in the bottom of the first and adding one more in the second. In the third, Brooke Taylor doubled to center field, later scoring on a Paige Hess lineout to cut the lead to 6-1. Siena (0-6) added another score in the fifth after another double by Taylor and an RBI single by Jazmin Ortiz.
San Diego State tacked one run on in the bottom of the fifth before DeFalco's solo home run cut the lead back down to four runs. However, the Aztecs tacked on three more in the sixth and ultimately took the win, 10-4.
Freshmen pitchers Maddie McMahon and Brooke Hughes each allowed five earned runs on the mound, with Hughes relieving McMahon in the first. Danielle Cacciola did not allow an earned run in one inning of relief, giving up just one hit. Chelsey Drew's three hit performance brought her total to seven hits this season, the most of any Saint so far in 2017.
The Saints will continue the California trip on Wednesday, February 22. Siena will take on UC Riverside at 5 p.m. Eastern.
