Siena Softball opened play at the UNCW Tournament on Friday. In game one, The Penguins blanked the Saints 5-0. In the second game, the Saints picked up the win over the Seahawks 4-1. Junior pitcher Lauren Butts won her first game of the season, while Paige Hess and Chelsey Drew had two hits each for Siena.

Game One: Youngstown State 5, Siena 0

Siena (1-12) was very quiet offensively in the opening game of the tournament. The Penguins (4-14) and freshman pitcher Maddie Lusk held the Saints to just one hit in the game, which came of the bat of Jess Vollmer in the third inning.

Freshman Maddie McMahon got the start on the mound, allowing seven hits and five earned runs in a complete game. McMahon struck out six Penguins in the game.

Game Two: Siena 4, UNCW 1

The Saints were victorious for the first time this season in their second game on Friday from Wilmington. Butts had her best performance so far in 2017, allowing just one run in the third inning. Butts did not walk a single Seahawk and recorded six strikeouts, bringing her total to 251 in her career, which ranks fifth all-time among Saints.

The offense picked up in the second game as well, with Siena recording eight hits. Drew and Hess had two hits each to lead the Saints.

Siena opened up the game with a 2-0 lead plating two in the top of the first. An RBI single by Hess scored Jazmin Ortiz and an RBI double by Madysen Cossack brought Hess home to give the Saints an early lead, which would be enough for Butts. The Saints and Seahawks each scored a run in the third and Siena tacked on another in the fifth to give Siena the win 4-1.

Siena will continue the UNCW Tournament on Saturday, March 11 at 10 a.m. when the team faces Hampton. The Saints will close out the day and tournament against Youngstown State at 12:30 p.m.
