Siena Softball wrapped up play at the UNCW Tournament on Saturday. In game one, the Pirates came from behind to take down the Saints 7-5. In the final tournament game, Siena was shutout by the Penguins 3-0. Chelsey Drew posted 2 RBIs on the day for the Saints, hitting her fourth home run of the season.
Game One: Hampton 7, Siena 5
Siena (1-14) had a strong start to the opening game on Saturday. The Saints scored four runs in the bottom of the first. Paige Hess had an RBI double; Loryn DeFalco added an RBI single; and Drew blasted a two-run shot over the fence to give Siena the 4-0 lead after one frame. The Saints and Pirates (5-12) each put up one run in the second, giving Siena a 5-1 lead after two complete innings. Jess Vollmer tripled for the Saints in the second frame.
However, the Pirates would chip away at the lead, adding one run in the third and one run in the fourth to bring the score to 5-3 in favor of the Saints. Hampton then plated four runs on three hits in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead, which would be the final score. Freshman Maddie McMahon struck out eight Pirates in her seven innings of work on the mound.
Game Two: Youngstown State 3, Siena 0
The Saints were shut down offensively by Youngstown State for the second straight day in their final game from Wilmington. Junior pitcher Lauren Butts was solid on the mound, allowing just three earned runs in six innings, striking out four Penguins.
Siena's offense only generated two hits off Penguin pitcher Maddie Lusk. Lauren Sabihon and Brooke Taylor each singled in the sixth for Siena. Youngstown State scored all three of its runs in the third on four singles to take a 3-0 victory over the Saints.
Siena will next play in their home opener on Tuesday, March 21. The Saints will host Hartford for two games, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
