Siena Softball opened a four game weekend set in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday. In the first game, the Saints bested Robert Morris 3-2 before dropping a nine-inning decision to host UMBC in the final game of the day. Jazmin Ortiz totaled three hits for Siena on the day and pitcher Lauren Butts picked up her second win of the season.
Game One: Siena 3, Robert Morris 2
Junior pitcher Lauren Butts was excellent on the mound for Siena (2-15) in the first of four games this weekend for the Saints. In a complete game effort, Butts allowed just five hits and two unearned runs, striking out one Colonial.
Offensively, Siena had just four hits but was able to capitalize on them to plate the necessary three runs to defeat Robert Morris (5-17). Madysen Cossack scored two runs in the game for the Saints, while Brooke Taylor and Loryn DeFalco had one RBI each.
The Saints struck first in the contest scoring one run in the top of the fourth before the Colonials plated two in the bottom half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. Siena would score the game-winning runs in the sixth inning on one hit, two walks, and a wild pitch.
Game Two: UMBC 4, Siena 3 (9)
Siena took quick 1-0 lead in its second game of the day. Jazmin Ortiz led off the contest with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cossack. The Retrievers took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits.
The Saints responded in the fifth with two runs to tie the game at 3-3. DeFalco led off the frame with a single and Lauren Sabihon added another single before Ortiz hit her second double of the game to score Sabihon after pinch runner Claire McNamara scored on an error. Unfortunately, the Retrievers would eventually score in the bottom the ninth on an RBI single to take the victory 4-3 in extra innings.
The Saints are scheduled to play two more in Baltimore on Sunday. The Saints will battle Robert Morris at 10 a.m. and UMBC at 12 p.m. to finish the weekend.
