Siena Softball took the short trip over to UAlbany on Thursday for the team's first doubleheader in the Capital District this season. The Great Danes defeated the Saints 11-3 in game one and took the win 7-2 in game two. Junior infielder Paige Hess led Siena with four hits.
Game One: UAlbany 11, Siena 3 (5)
Siena (3-18) started the first game of the doubleheader off strong, taking a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Madysen Cossack hit her first home run of the season, bringing home Hess who had singled in the previous at bat.
However, the Great Danes (13-7) would immediately respond in the bottom of the frame and take their first lead 3-2 on a three run home-run. The Saints tied it back up at 3-3 in the top of the second. Loryn DeFalco opened up the inning with a double and was brought around to score on an RBI single by freshman catcher Amanda Dodson.
Unfortunately, the Great Danes' offense exploded in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on four hits to lead 8-3. Two of the hits were home runs. UAlbany would tack on three more runs in the third on their final home run of the game and pick up the win 11-3 in five innings. The two teams totaled six hits each, but four of the six were out of the park for the Great Danes, giving them a game one win.
Game Two: UAlbany 7, Siena 2
Siena was bested 7-2 in the second game at Albany. This time, the Great Danes struck first with one run in the first. The Saints came back in the top of the second with one run of their own to tie it up 1-1. UAlbany took back the lead in the bottom of the frame on a two-run shot to make it a 3-1 game.
The Saints then responded in the top of the third when Hess hit a solo shot to make it a one-run game once again. It was her first home run of the season and 12th of her Siena career. Freshman pitcher Brooke Hughes then put two zeros up on the board to keep it a one-run game heading into the bottom of the fifth. UAlbany then scored two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to complete the victory and doubleheader sweep over Siena.
The Saints are scheduled to open MAAC play this weekend with doubleheaders at Saint Peter's on Saturday, April 1 and at Marist on Sunday, April 2. First pitch from Jersey City, New Jersey is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
