April 14, 2017

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

Siena Softball split a conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon with the visiting Iona Gaels. The two teams entered tied for second place in the MAAC with identical 5-1 records. The Saints picked up a walk-off win 5-3 in nine innings in game one before falling 8-0 in five innings in the final game. Freshman Lauren Sabihon was the game one hero as her two run home run lifted the Saints to victory in extra innings.

Game One: Siena 5, Iona 3 (9)

The Saints (11-22, 6-2) struck first in game one, putting two on the board in the second. Chelsey Drew opened the inning with a walk, then advanced to third on an RBI double by Jazmin Ortiz. Amanda Dodson provided an RBI groundout and Sarah Ho added an RBI single to make it 2-0 Siena.

The Gaels cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth on one hit and one error by Siena. The score remained 2-1 until the seventh when Kelsey Long put Iona up 3-2 on a two-run shot to center.

Siena came back though in the bottom the frame to tie it up 3-3 and send it to extras. Madysen Cossack's RBI single scored Brooke Taylor in the inning.

The two teams were held scoreless in the eighth and the Gaels were kept off the board in the ninth. Sabihon delivered her first career home run in her first at-bat of the day with two outs in the ninth to give the Saints the walk-off victory and sixth conference win.

Junior Lauren Butts pitched the complete game for Siena. Butts allowed six hits and two earned runs, along with seven strikeouts en route to her sixth victory of the season. Cossack and Patricia Kalesse had two hits each in the contest for the Saints.

Game Two: Iona 8, Siena 0 (5)

The Saints' offense was unable to get much going in game two off Iona pitcher Alana Evans. Evans allowed just two hits in the five inning complete game and struck out five Saints. Paige Hess and Drew each had one hit in the series finale.

The Gaels got on the board quickly, scoring three runs in the first and adding two more in the third. Iona also plated three in the fifth to end the game early for Siena.

Freshman pitcher Maddie McMahon allowed four earned runs in two and two-thirds innings of work before Danielle Cacciola and Brooke Hughes closed out the game for Siena.

The Saints will return to Siena Field on Saturday for two more conference games. Siena will take on Canisius at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
