Softball Splits at League Front Runner Manhattan

Siena Softball battled first place Manhattan on Saturday in Riverdale, New York. The Saints took game one 5-3 over the Jaspers. In game two, Manhattan held on to a 3-2 victory over Siena to retake first place in the MAAC Softball standings. Sophomore Madysen Cossack was three-for-five on the day with 2 RBIs for Siena and senior Chelsey Drew added three RBIs in the series.

Game One: Siena 5, Manhattan 3

The Saints (13-24, 8-4 MAAC) fell behind 2-0 in game one after allowing one run each in the second and third innings. Briana Matazinsky scored for the Jaspers (25-13, 9-3 MAAC) in the second after reaching on a walk and advancing on a stolen base and two wild pitches by starter Lauren Butts. An RBI single by Lauren Pitney pushed the Manhattan lead to 2-0 through three.

Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth. Siena started a rally in the sixth that would ultimately result in four runs and the win. Jazmin Ortiz opened the inning with a single before Jess Vollmer's fielder's choice put one on and one out for the Saints. Paige Hess then singled to move Vollmer to third. Reigning MAAC Player of the Week Madysen Cossack then delivered an RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1.

Senior Chelsey Drew then hit a ground-rule double to score pinch runner Claire McNamara and tie it up at 2-2. The next two batters, Loryn DeFalco and Brooke Taylor reached on errors, plating pinch runner Megan McNamara and Drew to make it 4-2 Saints.

The Jaspers were able to get one run of Butts in the sixth but the Saints also tacked on one run on an RBI single by Drew to complete a 5-3 victory in game one. Butts struck out eight Jaspers in the complete game win, allowing two earned runs on three hits while walking eight.

Game Two: Manhattan 3, Siena 2

Freshman pitcher Maddie McMahon started game two for the Saints and allowed three runs in the contest, all in the second inning on a home run by Victoria Ross. McMahon gave up three hits, struck out five, and walked five in the complete game.

Manhattan's freshman starter Nicole Williams shut down the Siena offense for the first six innings in game two, not allowing a single hit. In the seventh, Cossack and Drew hit back-to-back solo home runs to cut the lead down to 3-2, but a double play ended the game three batters later, securing the win for the Jaspers.

Manhattan remains in first place in the MAAC with a 9-3 record after today's split. The Saints are in a second place tie with Iona. Both teams are 8-4 in the first 12 conference games.

The Saints will be back in action on Sunday, April 23 in Hamden, Connecticut. Siena will take on Quinnipiac in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
