Softball Sweeps Sacred Heart

Siena Softball hosted Sacred Heart for an afternoon doubleheader on Thursday. The Saints took the game one win 7-3 before completing the sweep with a 7-0 shutout. Madysen Cossack had 7 RBIs in the doubleheader for the Saints and Brooke Hughes and Danielle Cacciola earned their first wins of the season on the mound.

Game One: Siena 7, Sacred Heart 3

The Saints (16-25, 9-5 MAAC) jumped out to an early 4-1 after the first inning. The Pioneers (16-24) plated one run in the opening frame on an RBI double by Victoria D'Addario, but Siena immediately took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. An RBI double by Paige Hess tied it at 1-1 and Cossack blasted her sixth home run of the season to give Siena a 4-1 lead.

Sacred Heart cut the lead to 4-2 in the second on a solo shot by Hannah Ford, but again the Saints responded with two in the bottom half. Cossack was awarded her fourth RBI of the contest on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded and Chelsey Drew chipped in a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2 through two. The Pioneers got one back in the third on an unearned run then the score remained 6-3 until the bottom of the fifth.

In the fifth, Siena tacked on one more run on an RBI double by Brooke Taylor to make the final score 7-3. Freshman Brooke Hughes picked up her first collegiate win in the complete game effort. Hughes allowed just two earned runs and walked only one Pioneer in the victory.

Game Two: Siena 7, Sacred Heart 0

In game two, senior pitcher Danielle Cacciola made her first start of the season and pitched five scoreless frames, allowing only one hit. Cacciola struck out three and walked two in her first win of the season. Maddie McMahon recorded the final six outs and preserved the shutout for Siena, adding two strikeouts.

Offensively, the Saints got things going early again, putting up two in the first. Jazmin Ortiz and Jess Vollmer singled to open the frame and Hess doubled to plate the first run. Vollmer scored on a sacrifice fly by Cossack to make it 2-0. Siena added one more in the third on another RBI double by Hess.

In the fourth, Siena pushed the lead to 6-0 on RBI singles by Vollmer and Cossack. Cossack brought in three runs in game two and Vollmer was 3-3 in the contest. The final run came in the fifth when Ortiz singled to bring home Taylor and make it 7-0 Siena.

The Saints will host Rider on Saturday, April 29 at Siena Field. Game one of the doubleheader is set for noon.
