NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y- Siena Softball's season came to an end on Thursday in New Rochelle, New York. The #2 Saints dropped their opening round game to #6 Fairfield 3-0. In the second game of the day, Siena fell 4-3 to Manhattan in an elimination game.

Game One: #6 Fairfield 3, #2 Siena 0

To open the 2017 MAAC Tournament, #2 Siena faced #6 Fairfield, a team the Saints had swept in the regular season. Pitcher Destinee Pallotto shut down Siena, allowing just three singles in the complete game shutout, while striking out seven Saints.Siena starter Lauren Butts was also strong in the first four innings, leading to a 0-0 tie heading into the fifth.

The Stags broke through in the fifth though, plating three runs in the frame in what would be the only scoring frame of the contest. Angelina McGuire tripled with one away and was brought home by Amanda Ulzheimer to make it 1-0. Fairfield added two more on a single by Gianna Kinhofer to push the lead to 3-0.

Palotto retired nine in a row to preserve the win and take the complete game shutout. Jess Vollmer, Paige Hess, and Amanda Dodson were the only Saints to record a hit in the loss. Siena was without the services of two of its top hitters - Loryn DeFalco and First Team All-MAAC selection Chelsey Drew - who both missed the Tournament due to injury.

Butts went the distance, striking out four, but walking five in the defeat.

Game Two: #4 Manhattan 4, #2 Siena 3

In game two, the Saints fell behind 3-0 in the opening frame. Christine Gebhardt hit an RBI single and Lauren Pitney hit a two-run home run of freshman starter Maddie McMahon.

The Saints responded in the second inning, cutting the lead to one. Patricia Kalesse brought home a run on an RBI single and Siena added another unearned run in the frame. Lauren Sabihon and Jess Vollmer also had singles in the inning.

The Jaspers added a run back onto their lead in the third when Pitney delivered her third RBI of the game with a single to make it 4-2, but the Siena came right back in the bottom of the inning with another unearned run to cut the lead to 4-3. Sabihon scored after being hit by a pitch and a single by Amanda Dodson.

Siena had a few more opportunities in the game, leaving two on base in the fourth and leading off the seventh on a single by Brooke Taylor, but Manhattan held on for the 4-3 victory to advance in the tournament and eliminate the Saints.

The Saints ended with a 21-30 overall record, the program's seventh consecutive 20-win season and set a new program record with 14 MAAC conference wins. Siena also boasted its second ever Player of the Year winner in sophomore Madysen Cossack. The team will return all but two members, seniors Chelsey Drew and Danielle Cacciola, in 2018.
