LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Baseball Head Coach
Tony Rossi has announced the Saints' first six signings for the Class of 2023. Will Hearn, Kyle Lev, Matt Livingston, Donovan Montgomery, Bryce Mordecki, and Jack Moynihan have all signed and returned their National Letters of Intent during the early signing period, and will enroll at Siena College next fall.
"We are extremely excited to have this group of young men join our program and the Siena community," said head coach
Tony Rossi, who enters his milestone 50
th season at the helm. "This is a very talented class, with all six having a chance to have impactful athletic careers at Siena, and they will all be a positive part of the Siena community. Assistant coaches
Steve Adkins (recruiting coordinator) and
Dave Yamane did an outstanding job assembling this talented group."
A native of North Tonawanda, New York, Hearn plays for St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute in Buffalo. The 6-5, 210-pound left-handed pitcher registered 34 strikeouts over 28.2 innings this spring for the Marauders. Hearn possesses a mid-to-upper 80's fastball, with a developing curve and changeup.
"Will is a big strong left-hander with a great upside," commented Rossi. "He is both an outstanding baseball player and student, and is expected to receive immediate playing time. Will is a welcome addition to our school and community."
A 6-7, 210-pound right-handed pitcher out of Mississauga, Ontario, Lev is entering his third year playing an integral role with the prestigious Ontario Blue Jays program which perennially competes against some of the top competition from all over Canada. Lev, who previously attended St. Martin's Catholic Secondary School, features a fastball which currently tops out at 92 MPH, as well as a sharp breaking curve.
"Kyle is one of the top pitchers in Canada, and has outstanding stuff," explained Rossi. "He is a talented righty who should be ready to make a major contribution as a freshman."
Livingston was named a 2018 ALL-USA Massachusetts Baseball Second Team selection by
USA Today. The Whitinsville, Massachusetts product was also selected to the MBCA Central-Western Mass. Junior State Select All-Star Team and tabbed a Central Mass. Conference All-Star after leading St. John's to the Central Mass. Division I Semifinals this spring. The 6-3, 260-pound left-handed hitting first baseman connected at an even .400 clip during his junior season, while driving in 22 runs.
"Matt is a great student as well as a real good first baseman," noted Rossi. "He can hit and hit with power. We feel that in a very short time he will be a major contributor on both the offensive and defensive sides of the field."
Montgomery matriculates to Siena from Burlington, Vermont, where he was tabbed a Northern Vermont All-League Honorable Mention selection for Burlington this past spring. The 5-11, 180-pound shortstop was named MVP of his summer baseball team, the Colchester Cannons. A versatile player, Montgomery is comfortable in both the infield and outfield, and is a plus hitter with real good speed.
"Donovan has a lean frame, and is an aggressive player," remarked Rossi. "His versatility will be an immense help to the program, as he can swing back from the infield and outfield effectively. We feel that he can be an immediate contributor in a very short period of time."
Mordecki was named the All-County and All-League Player of the Year in addition to being tabbed an All-Section honoree after leading Roy C. Ketcham to the Section I Conference I League A Championship. The 6-0, 180-pound catcher from Poughkeepsie, New York hit .512 with three home runs and 22 RBI this spring. A two-time
Poughkeepsie Journal All-Star, he plays his summer baseball for the Taconic Rangers.
"Bryce is a raw talent with huge upside," said Rossi. "He is another one of those diamonds in the rough. He has a real good arm, can hit, and can hit with power. Bryce has a high ceiling, and we're extremely happy to have him with us. We feel that Bryce will get quality playing time immediately."
A 6-2, 200-pound right-handed pitcher out of Taunton, Massachusetts, Moynihan was named a
Boston Globe,
Boston Herald, and
Taunton Daily Gazette All-Scholastic All-Star. Also tabbed a Hockomock League All-Star, he posted a 4-1 record with a 1.43 ERA and 43 strikeouts spanning seven starts. Moynihan posted a pair of wins for Taunton over Super 8 teams, highlighted by a 15-strikeout performance vs. champion Franklin.
"Jack is a diamond in the rough," commented Rossi. He has raw talent with a huge upside. Jack has a good arm, with a sharp slider and a nice changeup. We're extremely happy to have him with us, and feel that he will get quality innings immediately."
The Siena Baseball program has enjoyed a great deal of success with its recruiting classes in recent years, with newcomers making significant contributions from the outset.
"We try to address significant needs with each recruiting class, but our general philosophy is to go out and attract the best athletes possible for our program," added Rossi. "We are always looking for the top arms and athletes available, and this group achieves that goal."
The first six members of the Class of 2023 join a Siena Baseball program which achieved its sixth straight 20-win campaign last season. The Saints qualified for their sixth MAAC Tournament appearance in eight seasons this past spring, and won multiple postseason contests for a seventh straight appearance.
