March 11, 2018 Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score
Siena Softball dropped its final two games at the Cherry Blossom Classic Sunday in Fairfax, Virginia. Cornell edged the Saints 3-2 in the opener, and host George Mason doubled up Siena 8-4 in the tournament finale. Junior first baseman Madysen Cossack led the way for the Saints in recording four hits and a pair of home runs on the day.
Game One: Cornell 3, Siena 2
Cornell (3-5) tied the game in the fifth and scored the decisive winning run in the sixth to rally past Siena (1-8) in another tightly contested one-run battle between the squads. The Saints had previously fended off the Big Red 1-0 in the tournament opener Saturday.
Cossack and freshman left fielder Isabelle DeChiaro each went 2-3 with a run scored for Siena which played in its third straight one-run game to open tournament play. Cossack's sixth inning double marked the milestone 100th hit of her career.
After Cornell opened the scoring with a run in the third, the Saints broke through for both of their runs to claim the lead in the fourth. Cossack opened the frame with a solo home run, and sophomore designated player Patricia Kalesse put Siena in front with a two-out double to plate DeChiaro.
Tori Togashi's solo home run drew the Big Red even in the fifth, and Erin Rockstroh delivered the eventual game-winning, bases loaded RBI single for Cornell in the sixth.
Sophomore hurler Maddie McMahon went the distance in being saddled with the tough luck loss for the Saints. She scattered five hits and three runs (two earned), while walking just one and striking out six over her seven innings of work.
Lisa Nelson earned the complete game win in the circle for the Big Red, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out five and walking none.
Game Two: George Mason 8, Siena 4
Brooke Sullivan recorded three hits and Jess Curbeira scored three runs as George Mason (8-8) scored five unanswered runs to rally past Siena in the tournament finale.
The Patriots struck for three runs on three hits and four walks to claim a 3-0 lead, albeit left the bases loaded to end the first. The Saints battled back, receiving an RBI single from sophomore centerfielder Lauren Sabihon in the second, and a go-ahead three-run home run from Cossack to claim a 4-3 lead in the third.
But George Mason tallied three straight two-out hits to plate a pair of runs and reclaim the lead for good at 5-4 in the fourth, before adding three key insurance runs on the strength of two hits and three defensive miscues by Siena in the sixth.
Cossack and senior third baseman Paige Hess each notched a pair of hits to pace the Saints.
Siena returns to action when they travel to the nation's capital for George Washington's Buff & Blue Challenge. Tournament play commences Friday morning with matchups vs. Lafayette and Brown at 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m., respectively.
