March 16, 2018 Box Score
Siena Softball split a pair of one-run contests on the first day of George Washington's Buff & Blue Challenge in Washington, DC. The Saints held off a late charge to defeat Lafayette 7-6 in the tournament opener, while Brown rallied with four runs in the final inning to walk-off 4-3 in the second game.
Game One: Siena 7, Lafayette 6
Siena (2-9) raced out to a 6-0 lead through two innings and withstood a three-run seventh from Lafayette (1-14) to secure their second one-run victory on the young season. Junior Jess Vollmer and classmate Madysen Cossack each tallied a pair of hits to pace the offense. Vollmer also scored twice and Cossack knocked in two runs.
Freshman Isabelle DeChiaro and junior Loryn DeFalco each delivered RBI singles to stake the Saints to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening frame. Siena seemingly blew the game open with four additional runs in the second, punctuated by a two-run double by Cossack.
However, the Leopards halved the deficit with three runs in the third on an RBI single followed by consecutive bases loaded walks. Nonetheless, Siena harbored a 7-3 lead heading into the seventh after adding an insurance run on an RBI single from senior Brooke Taylor in the third.
But in the final frame, Lafayette loaded the bases with one out and Ellen McDonnell cleared them with a three-run triple to pull the Leopards within 7-6. However, sophomore southpaw Brooke Hughes induced each of the next two batters to ground out to preserve the win.
Game Two: Brown 4, Siena 3
All five Brown (4-6) batters reached safely in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Bears scored four times to stun the Saints. Sophomore Lauren Sabihon doubled twice and scored a pair of runs to lead Siena, which played to its fifth one-run decision in its past six games.
The Saints opened the scoring on an RBI groundout by DeChiaro in the first, and added a pair of runs on singles by Cossack and DeFalco in the fifth.
But in the final frame, Grayson Metzger delivered a game-tying, bases-clearing three-run double to wipe out the deficit and knot the score. Kaitlin Okimoto then drove in Metzger to provide the walk-off result.
Sophomore Maddie McMahon went the distance in the circle for Siena and struck out six.
The Saints return to action with Day Two of the three-day Buff & Blue Challenge Saturday. Siena begins the day against host George Washington at 11:15 a.m., before competing in a playoff round vs. a yet-to-be-determined opponent later in the afternoon.
