Siena Baseball secured its first two victories of 2018 and commenced conference action triumphant with a doubleheader sweep of Iona. The Saints slugged their way to a convincing 15-2 victory in the MAAC opener, before clinching the series with a 3-2 win in the nightcap at City Park in New Rochelle, New York.
Junior Brian Kelly and sophomore Jonathan Crimmin tallied five hits apiece on the afternoon to lead a balanced offensive barrage for Siena (2-17, 2-0) which amassed 34 base runners and 24 total hits in the sweep. Meanwhile, junior Tommy Miller and sophomore Brendan White each tossed complete game gems on the mound for the Saints which have won seven of their past eight in New Rochelle.
Game One: Siena 15, Iona 2
Siena erupted for 13 runs on 13 hits over the fourth and fifth innings to cruise to victory in the opener. The Saints tallied season-highs in both runs scored and hits (18) as all nine batters both scored and drove in runs, while eight recorded hits. Kelly and Crimmin each went 4-6 at the dish, with Kelly finishing just a home run shy of a cycle.
Following a Lou Matarazzo solo home run which staked Iona (4-15, 0-2) to a 1-0 lead in the second, Siena batted around in sending 11 men to plate in both the fourth and fifth innings in an impressive offensive showing.
Remarkably, each of the first seven Saints recorded hits to open the fourth. Kelly and sophomore outfielder Zach Durfee delivered the biggest blows of the seven-run frame with two RBI hits. Siena then put the game out of reach with six more runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of senior Jordan Bishop.
The run support proved to be more than enough for Miller who went the distance for just the second time in his career. The southpaw scattered eight hits and two runs while striking out seven without issuing a walk.
Game Two: Siena 3, Iona 2 (7)
Senior captain Phil Madonna extended his hitting streak to 12 straight with a pair of hits including the game-winning RBI single in the top of the fifth as the Saints completed the doubleheader sweep to clinch the series.
The Siena offense picked up right where it had left off in Game One, by opening the seven-inning affair with a pair of first inning runs. Kelly opened the scoring with an RBI single, while Crimmin followed with a sacrifice fly.
The Gaels got a run back in the fourth on a Matarazzo RBI single, but in the following frame Madonna delivered the decisive hit to plate Kelly. The insurance run would prove to be key, as Iona rallied back within a run in the home half of the frame on a run-scoring single from Sean Scales.
However, White retired each of the final eight batters he faced including three via strikeout to preserve the win. The righthander surrendered seven hits and two runs while striking out five and walking none.
Siena will look to complete the three-game sweep when the teams conclude the series Monday at 2 p.m.
