Softball Sweeps Howard, Records Milestone 500th Win

March 27, 2018

Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

Madysen Cossack homered in each game and both Lauren Butts and Maddie McMahon twirled two-hit gems as Siena Softball swept Howard at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy in Washington, DC. The Saints captured the opener 6-1 to record the program's milestone 500th all-time win, before mercy ruling the Bison 9-0 in five innings to complete the sweep.

Game One: Siena 6, Howard 1
Siena (5-11) scored five unanswered runs over the final two innings to take the opener for the program's 500th victory. The Saints broke a 1-1 tie heading into the sixth with four runs on four hits to claim the lead.

Cossack homered to open the scoring in the first, and joined Isabelle DeChiaro in pacing Siena with two hits apiece. Lauren Sabihon scored twice and, like Cossack, Amanda Dodson drove in a pair of runs.

Howard (3-25) knotted the score in the home half of the second on an RBI groundout by Zaria Hall, which sent the game into the latter innings deadlocked.

But in the decisive sixth inning, the Saints hit around sending all nine batters to the plate. Each of the first four batters reached base safely, and Dodson delivered the key blow with a pinch-hit two-run double. Siena tacked on an insurance run on an infield single by Cossack in the seventh.

Butts went the distance in the circle allowing just two hits and the one run while walking four and striking out six to secure the win.

Game Two: Siena 9, Howard 0 (5)
The Saints blew the game open with a seven-run fifth inning to cruise to the sweep. Siena pounded out 10 hits over five innings as eight of nine starters recorded hits and eight scored runs.

The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third on Cossack's second home run of the afternoon. The reigning MAAC Player of the Year and Preseason Player of the Year moved into the top-10 in program history with the junior's 16th career home run.

Siena then put the game away with its most productive offensive inning of the season with its seven-run fifth. The Saints hit around sending 12 batters to the plate, and amassed their seven runs on the benefit of just four hits. Jazmin Ortiz and DeChiaro each recorded two-run hits to highlight the scoring.

Meanwhile McMahon allowed just two baserunners to record her first complete game shutout of the season. She surrendered just two hits and struck out six without issuing a walk.

Siena continues its Spring Break trip Wednesday with doubleheader action at Towson commencing at 2 p.m.
