LOUDONVILLE, NY -- Siena Softball split its home and MAAC opening doubleheader vs. Niagara Saturday afternoon at Siena Field. The Purple Eagles scored four times in the fifth en route to a 6-1 victory in the opener, while the Saints came back to secure the split with a 3-0 triumph in the nightcap behind a complete game two-hit shutout from Maddie McMahon.
Game One: Niagara 6, Siena 1
Niagara (8-19, 1-1) broke a late 1-1 tie with four runs in the fifth, and added an insurance run in the sixth to capture the MAAC opener for both teams.
The Purple Eagles manufactured a run on a two-out RBI single by Jerri Ann Orfano in the first, before Siena (6-14, 1-1) rallied to knot the score in the home half of the fourth. Amanda Dodson singled home pinch runner Neysa Ouellette for the tying tally.
But Niagara batted around in setting all nine batters to the plate during its decisive four-run fifth. Orfano knocked in her second run of the game with the go-ahead bases loaded walk, and was followed by Jennifer Timm's two-run single.
Dodson, Madysen Cossack, and Lauren Sabihon paced the Saints with a pair of hits apiece. Cossack, who entered play leading the nation in doubles per game, tallied her 11th two-bagger of the season.
Game Two: Siena 3, Niagara 0
McMahon twirled her second complete game shutout this week to pitch Siena to a split. The sophomore righthander surrendered just two hits and one walk while striking out six in arguably her most masterful performance of the young season.
Meanwhile the Saints' bats provided a run of support in the second before adding two key insurance tallies in the bottom of the sixth. Ouellette delivered an RBI single to plate Loryn DeFalco to open the scoring in the second, while freshman Isabelle DeChiaro and DeFalco added run-scoring hits in the sixth.
McMahon retired each of the first nine batters she faced, and held Niagara hitless over the first four innings. She finished the game equally strong in setting down nine of the final 10 Purple Eagle batters.
The Saints return to action Wednesday when they host Hartford for a mid-week non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
