Siena Baseball split a pair of scheduled seven-inning non-conference contests with Fordham in the Bronx. The Rams rallied with six unanswered runs to walk off with an 8-7 win in eight innings in the opener, while the Saints salvaged the doubleheader with a 5-3 triumph in the nightcap
Game One: Fordham 8, Siena 7 (8)
Billy Godrick delivered the walk-off RBI single with one out in the bottom of the eighth as Fordham (19-10-1) came back from down 7-2 to take the opener in extras. Godrick drove in three runs total for the Rams, which saw every starter record a hit while tallying 14 overall as a team.
Joe Drpich and Jordan Bishop both homered for Siena (6-23), which opened a five-run lead in the fifth inning of the scheduled seven-inning affair. The Saints broke the frame open with a bases-clearing, three-run double down the left field line from Phil Madonna.
But, Fordham responded with a five-run frame of its own to pull even at 7-7 in the sixth. Jake MacKenzie highlighted the inning with a two-run double for the Rams.
In the eighth MacKenzie, who doubled three times in the game, recorded his final two-bagger to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Godrick then came through with the game-winning single through the left side of the infield to score Justin Bardwell with the winning run.
Game Two: Siena 5, Fordham 3 (7)
Madonna and Jonathan Crimmin each recorded three-hit contests for Siena which pounded out 13 hits to secure the split. Madonna scored twice, while Crimmin and Bishop each knocked in a pair of runs.
The Saints carried a 2-1 lead into the final inning on the strength of a two-run third. Bishop opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly, and Crimmin added an RBI single in the frame.
Siena added what would prove to be three key insurance runs in the final inning, on three consecutive RBI from Brian Kelly, Bishop, and Crimmin. Fordham scored twice on four hits in its final at-bat, but Godrick, who represented the potential winning run, struck out swinging to end the game.
Dylan D'Anna earned the win in his season debut on the mound for the Saints, tossing a pair of scoreless, hitless innings with a pair of walks and three strikeouts. Matt Pierce added three, one-hit shutout frames in relief.
Siena continues their 10-game road trip when they return to MAAC play against Quinnipiac. Due to a forecast of inclement weather this weekend in Connecticut, the teams will now open their series a day earlier than originally scheduled with a single game Friday at 3 p.m. in Hamden, followed by a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon.
