STATEN ISLAND, NY -- No. 2 seed Quinnipiac rallied late with three runs in the bottom of the ninth and walked off on Ben Gibson's RBI double in the 10th to end fourth seeded Siena Baseball's MAAC Tournament run with a 7-6 elimination game triumph at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Saints conclude their 2018 season with a final overall record of 21-35., while the Bobcats advance to face top seed Monmouth later Friday night for the right to face No. 3 seed Canisius in Saturday's MAAC Championship Series.
Siena scored the first three runs, harbored a 5-1 lead in the sixth, and a 6-3 advantage heading into the ninth. But in the bottom of the ninth, Quinnipiac (26-29) received an RBI single by Liam Scafariello, and a run-scoring groundout from Brian Moskey. With the Bobcats down to their final out, Colton Bender singled through the right side to bring home Scafariello with the tying run and send the game to extra innings.
In the bottom of the 10th, two of the first three Quinnipiac batters reached with singles. Gibson then hit a tailing liner to center just out of the outstretched reach of the sprawling Matt Hamel to score Kevin Huscher with the winning run.
Second Team All-MAAC selection Joe Drpich set a new Siena MAAC Tournament record with his third home run of the week. The senior slugger's two-run shot over the right field wall opened the scoring in the top of the third, as Drpich finished with 55 RBI this spring to mark the third highest total in program single season history. Overall, Drpich concludes his brilliant career ranking third all-time in program history in both home runs (39) and RBI (176), tied for third in total bases (394), fourth in both doubles (47) and extra-base hits (89), and 10th in hits (224). Drpich and Tom Sutera, who threw three stellar relief appearances, were later named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team.
Six Saints recorded multi-hit performances as part of a 15-hit attack. Jonathan Crimmin and First Team All-MAAC selection Phil Madonna each recorded three hits apiece to lead the way for Siena, which had advanced to the MAAC Championship Series in each of its previous six appearances dating back to 2008.
Dylan D'Anna tossed a season-high seven strong innings in just his sixth appearance of the year in receiving a no-decision for the Saints, which suffered one-run defeats in four of their final five losses to end the season.
Evan Vulgamore notched a game-high four hits for the Bobcats, which tallied 20 in total. Huscher, Dylan Lutz, and Moskey each added three hits apiece for Quinnipiac, which took three of four meetings from Siena this spring.
The Saints wrap up a successful 2018 season with the program's sixth straight 20-win campaign, while also achieving multiple MAAC Tournament wins for a seventh straight appearance. Siena says goodbye to a decorated four-member senior class, but is expected to return five from its starting lineup and doesn't graduate any hurlers from its pitching staff as the Saints prepare to chase a sixth MAAC Championship in 2019.
