Having gone 2-1 in a three-match road trip, the Saints began MAAC action with a 3-1 win over Canisius on October 2, with junior
Alejandro Riquelme leading the way with a first-half offensive pillage. The Las Rozas, Spain native used a span of six minutes and 52 seconds to record the first hat trick in program history since 2010, netting goals in the 34th, 36th and 41st minutes of the match. The team's point leader curved in a ball from outside the box on the first goal, and then used help from senior
Eamonn Conway and freshman
Mark Sojer on the second and sophomores
Aaron Martin and
Samuel Schwarz on the third.
Following the first career-multi goal performance for Riquelme, he now leads the MAAC in points (16) and assists (6), is tied for second in goals (5) and third in shots (30). Through just nine matches played, the junior's point total ties
Alexander Tejera (2016,16 games) and
Junior Rosero (2015, 20 games) for the most points by a Saint in a single season since
James Beeston had 20 in 2013. Riquelme also became the first Saint since Beeston in 2013 to record over five points in a match on Wednesday.
Riquelme already has the most assists by a Saint in a single season since current senior
Conor McGlynn registered eight helps during his MAAC All-Rookie Team performance in 2016. The junior from Las Rozas, Spain has nine career helps, while McGlynn has 15 on his career, good for fifth all-time and one away from tying for fourth. Riquelme sits in a 10-way split for the third-most assists in the nation as of Oct. 3, while McGlynn (15) is fifth all-time in helps in program history and needs one more to move into a tie for fourth.
The Saints are 17-10-3 in MAAC home openers since joining the conference in 1989, most recently defeating Monmouth, 1-0, on Sept. 29, 2018. nine of 18 matches in the 2019 campaign, Siena's offense (53 points) has already surpassed its production from all of 2018 (44 points) and currently leads the MAAC in points, goals and assists.
With the series having began back in 1982, Iona holds a slight 20-18-2 advantage of the Saints all-time and have won the last two head-to-head matchups. The Gaels most recently took home a 5-0 win over the Saints in New Rochelle, NY on Oct. 20, 2018. Iona leads also the series at Hickey Field, 9-8-1. Siena is looking for its first win at home against Iona since a 2-0 triumph on Oct. 19, 2013, having fallen in Loudonville against the Gaels in 2015 & 2017.
Picked to finish sixth in the 2019 MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, Iona enters Saturday's contest on a four-match winning streak, and holds the top overall record in the conference at 5-2. The Gaels have not lost since Sept. 10, and since defeated Binghamton (3-0), Sacred Heart (2-1), LIU (3-2) and most recently, Fairleigh Dickinson (2-1). Iona ranks second behind Siena in goals (16) and assists (16) in the MAAC, with junior Lenworth Lopez leading the team with five goals. The Gaels have seen a pair of newcomers earn MAAC Rookie of the Week honors this season in Ignacio Antequera-Sanchez (Sept. 16) and Eimantas Lotuzys (Sept. 9).
