In what was such a winter's day on the east coast, Siena Water Polo was California Dreamin', extending its winning streak to three with a pair of runaway victories to close out the Claremont Convergence Saturday afternoon. The Saints took down Occidental, 15-5, in Claremont, California, before crushing Caltech, 18-6, in nearby La Verne.
Looking to build off a double-overtime win over Fresno Pacific the previous evening, the Saints fell in an early 2-0 hole to the Tigers before scoring six unanswered goals through the middle of the second quarter, heading into the half with an 8-3 lead. Steadied by a career-high six goals from freshman
Georgia Vargas, which stands as the most scored by a Saint this season, the team netted three more in the third quarter and four in the final stanza to improve to 2-3 against their west coast foes all-time. Junior
Diana Fernandez paired four goals with three assists for seven total points in the affair, while Sophomore
Anna Borton (2 goals), sophomore
Kristen Burger (1 goal & 1 assist) and seniors
Daniella Fuertes and
Terez Touhey (1 goal each) also chipped in offensively. Senior
Kennedy Joseph spent the entirety of the contest in-net, making a pair of saves in the process.
The Saints then stormed four miles west to take on the Beavers and conclude their first of two west coast trips of the season. The team had no trouble picking up where they left off, jetting off to a 5-1 lead at the end of the first period and a 13-3 advantage at the half. After the teams each scored once in the third quarter, Siena closed out the game with four more goals to complete its longest winning streak since the end of the 2017 season. Senior
Sara Lopez and freshman
Bianca Prinsloo lead the onslaught with four goals apiece, while Fuertes nailed down a hat trick and Fernandez and Vargas each scored twice more. Senior
Nichol Feldtz handled the goaltending duties in the win, making five saves and a steal.
Following the doubleheader sweep, Siena is now off to it's best start through 15 games since 2007, and it's third best overall in program history. By winning three of four games at the Claremont Convergence and four of five total in the Golden State, the Saints put together their best-ever performance at both the tournament or any west coast trip they've taken since the team took the pool in 2002. Totaling 17 points in the final four games of the weekend, Fernandez moved into eighth place all-time in program history with 250, passing
Lea Allen (248, 2011-14).
The Saints will now head back east to begin 2019 MAAC play, taking on conference foes, Villanova, VMI and Iona next weekend in Lexington, VA.
