Box Score BOONE, NC – Siena Baseball (0-16) came close to its first win of the season Tuesday but was ultimately denied on the road. The Saints dropped a 7-5 decision at Appalachian State to kick off a two-day series at Jim & Bettie Smith Field in Boone, North Carolina.
Continuing spring break action in the Tar Heel State, Siena had to climb back from a seven-run deficit that amounted after three innings. The Mountaineers pulled out to a 6-0 lead after an inning in their home opener, Using an RBI single, bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a grand slam to do so. App State added an RBI single two frames later.
Siena got on the board with a comeback frame in the top of the sixth, sending int four runs. Senior Jonathan Crimmin broke the Saints through with an RBI single up the middle that scored sophomore Evan St. Claire. Freshman Matt Livingston & junior Pat O'Hare then crossed the plate with an RBI double from junior Jake Hall on the next at-bat. Crimmin finally crossed the plate himself later in the inning off a sacrifice fly from sophomore Ryan McGee.
A bases-loaded walk from Crimmin in the top of the seventh gave the game its final score, with sophomore Devan Kruzinski coming home from third. The Saints left the bases loaded in the seventh and one more on in the top of the ninth, as the Mountaineers closed out the win after giving up five consecutive runs.
Sophomore Brendan Quigley (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Siena, giving up seven runs on six hits while walking and striking out two batters apiece in two and two-third innings. Sophomore James Flood pitched the remaining 5.1 innings of the contest, also striking out and walking two batters each and allowing just three hits. Cam Roberts (2-1) took home the win in five and one-third innings for ASU, allowing four runs on as many hits.
Siena will be back in action in search of a victory on Wednesday, March 11 against the Mountaineers. First pitch in the mid-week matinee is set for 11 AM.
