For Siena's Rossi, a Rare Spring Without Baseball

Longest Tenured Division I Coach Waits in Florida During Pandemic

The following feature written by Mark Singelais appeared in the Albany Times Union on March 31, 2020

Siena baseball coach Tony Rossi starts his day by reading six newspapers in the morning. He texts his players and responds to emails from recruits. He takes walks and golf cart rides with his wife, Val, around their gated community in Estero, Fla.

He's trying to keep busy during the coronavirus pandemic that canceled Siena's season and shut down the sports world. But there's still a large void for Rossi, 76, the longest-tenured coach in NCAA Division I baseball history.

He began coaching Siena baseball in 1970, during Richard Nixon's first term as president. His 51st season ended prematurely on March 12 with the Saints off to an 0-17 start.

How much does he miss baseball?
