McMahon Honored as Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month for May

The Softball Standout Recently Concluded Her Storied Career at Siena

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Softball's Maddie McMahon was given one final honor to round out her storied career in the Green and Gold. The graduate student pitcher was honored as the Leo Dufort Female Athlete of the Month for May 2021, earning the final award for the 2020-21 academic year.

The first graduate student in the history of the program, the right-handed pitcher recently concluded a five-year stint in Loudonville, which placed her inside the program's all-time top-10 in multiple pitching categories. McMahon finished the 2021 season tied for second in career wins (39), knotted for third in shutouts tossed (8), fourth in strikeouts (390), fifth in games started (74) & appearances (101) and seventh in complete games (33). A Second Team All-MAAC selection in 2019, the Red Bank, New Jersey native held a 3.22 ERA with 60 strikeouts this past season, including setting the single-game record for strikeouts with 13 against Saint Peter's on April 10.

After earning her bachelor's degree in Marketing from Siena in 2020, McMahon received her MBA with a 3.95 GPA in 2021. A four-time MAAC All-Academic Team and five-time MAAC Academic Honor Roll member, she was named a candidate for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award in 2021, and served as a two-year captain of her team.

The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954 and was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
