LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Men's Soccer (1-0) wasted no time in seeing a member of its program honored with a MAAC weekly award during the 2022 season. Graduate Student goalkeeper Greg Monroe was honored as the first MAAC Defensive Player of the Week this year, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Beginning his unprecedented fifth season as the starting keeper for the Saints, Monroe turned in a clean sheet to lead Siena to a 1-0 victory at Sacred Heart Thursday evening, with all three of his saves coming in the second half of play.
The win also served as the 21st career victory in-goal for the Clifton Park, New York native, knotting him with program great Brett Boskiewicz (1991-94) for the most wins by a Saints goalkeeper. Monroe also moved into a tie for second all-time in career shutouts with his 11th in-goal.
The weekly award comes as the second of Monroe's career and the program's first Defensive Player of the Week nod since he was honored during his sophomore campaign on September 23, 2019.
Siena hosts UMass Lowell (1-0) in its 2022 home opener at Hickey Field this afternoon at 4 PM.
