Box Score DAVIS, CA– Siena Softball's first trip to California in recent memory came to an end Saturday as the Saints battled Saint Mary's to end the Capital Classic. The Gaels took a 2-1 decision at La Rue Field in Davis, California, while Siena's scheduled nightcap against Southern Utah in Sacramento was canceled due to inclement weather.
The Green and Gold got on the board first to kick off its first-ever meeting with Saint Mary's in the form of an RBI single from senior Jocelyn Ulrich that sent in classmate Emma McLaughlin in the top of the second. The Gaels responded with a crooked frame in the home half of the third to take the lead for good on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
Saint Mary's went on to retire 16 of the final 17 Siena batters in order defensively to walk away victorious, with pitcher Chelsea Bennett (1-3) allowing just one run on two hits and striking out a pair in a complete game win in the circle.
McLaughlin and Ulrich logged hits for the Saints, with graduate student Ava Fitzmaurice (3-2) taking the complete game loss with two runs given up on four hits and a pair of strikeouts.
Siena will have two weeks away from play before heading to Connecticut for a three-game weekend series with Hartford March 18-19.
