Leo Student Athletes of the Month for April 2023 Announced

Baseball Fifth Year, Women’s Golf Sophomore Honored

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Athletics announced the latest recipients of the Leo Dufort Student Athletes of the Month on Thursday. Baseball fifth year Arlo Marynczak and women's golf sophomore Manoela Barcellos were honored for the month of April.

A five-year member of Siena Baseball, Marynczak has made 61 appearances and 16 starts for the Saints since 2019, and recently became just the fourth pitcher in program history to eclipse the 200-strikeout mark in a career. The Delmar, New York native was honored as the MAAC Pitcher of the Week back on April 11, and has taken home the award twice in his collegiate career. He tossed the third no-hitter in program history on April 24, 2021 in a seven-inning, ten strikeout performance against Saint Peter's.

A health studies major who will earn his Bachelor's degree this month, Marynczak holds a 3.19 cumulative GPA, and has been a member of the MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Academic Honor Roll.

Having just recently completed her second season with Siena Women's Golf, Barcellos led her team with an 81.06 scoring average over 17 rounds during eight tournaments this year. The Itatiba, Brazil product logged a pair of top-ten tournament finishes, led the team with a 54.1 finishing percentage this season, and was named the MAAC Women's Golfer of the Week on April 5.

A mathematics major, Barcellos holds a 3.95 cumulative GPA, and posted a perfect 4.0 mark during the Fall 2022 term. She has been a member of the MAAC All-Academic Team, MAAC Academic Honor Roll, and was heralded as a WGCA All-American Scholar last year.

The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954 and was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
